All The Science You Need to Know By Age 7

One of the best educational books that I have read with my kiddos thus far is the Usborne book called, All The Science You Need to Know By Age 7. It is a succinct and wonderfully arranged book, covering the basics that your children will need to know for Science, starting from Kindergarten and moving into Grade 2. Whether you homeschool or not, this is a highly beneficial teaching (or reviewing) aid.

In our home, we LOVE science. We

love it in the kitchen or out in nature. We love it on field trips or in the countless books we read. And my engineering-minded son will make elastic powered boats for the bathtub, create slime out of marshmallows, or come up with his own experiments with ice cubes and food colouring – he loves it all! Although learning the sciences is not a chore for us, sometimes the teaching side holds its own challenges. But I can say that this book has proven to be the perfect summary! My kiddos were never bored as we read, instead they made sure I didn’t miss a single speech bubble, and they often requested more pages. I have also used this book to teach a group of children, of a variety of ages, about materials – the different kinds of materials, where they come from, how Scientists choose specific materials, etc. I could not have written a better outline myself.

The educational assistants in this book – cute insects, arachnids and worms – add to the level of fun that this book brings to learning. And the silly but memorable pictures that accompany the teaching points are ones that I still reference with my own kiddos today. The only downside I found is that the speech bubbles of the insects are in cursive writing, making it harder for a young reader to fully benefit from this book when reading it on their own. However, on the positive side, that is a great reason to grab a snack and this book and read together. :)

Finally, I want to note that Usborne has also put out a book called All The Maths You Need to Know By Age 7, (“maths” because they are based in England). We have yet to read this one through, but I anticipate that my 7-year-old and I will finish it this school year. If it is anything like their science version, we will be equally impressed!
